Marrakech is the best base in Morocco for day trips — mountains, waterfalls, a UNESCO kasbah and the Atlantic coast are all within reach and back by evening. These are the eight most worthwhile, roughly nearest first.

1. Ourika Valley — about 1 hour

The closest escape from the city: a green river valley in the foothills of the High Atlas, with Berber villages, a Monday souk, and a short scramble up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. Half or full day.

2. Agafay Desert — about 45 minutes

A rocky, lunar-looking desert rather than sand dunes, with camel and quad rides, camps for lunch or dinner, and sunset views back toward the Atlas. The quick fix if you cannot spare the days for Merzouga.

3. Atlas Mountains and Imlil — about 1.5 hours

Imlil is the trailhead for Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak at 4,167 m. Day visitors walk between villages through walnut and apple terraces and stop for lunch with a Toubkal view — no climbing experience needed.

4. Ouzoud Falls — about 2.5 hours

The tallest waterfalls in North Africa at 110 m, dropping in tiers through a gorge with wild Barbary macaques and small boats at the base. A full day out.

5. Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate — about 3.5 hours

The most famous kasbah in Morocco and the film studios of Ouarzazate, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Long as a day trip — it works better as the first stop of a multi-day desert tour — but it is doable in a day.

6. Essaouira — about 2.5 to 3 hours

7. Lalla Takerkoust Lake and the Kik Plateau — about 45 minutes

A reservoir with lakeside lunch spots, kayaking, and a scenic plateau drive. Often combined with the Agafay Desert on the same day.

8. Oukaïmeden — about 1.5 hours

High above the Ourika Valley, Oukaïmeden is Morocco's ski resort in winter and a quiet walking area the rest of the year, with prehistoric rock carvings near the village.
