Merzouga vs Zagora vs Agafay: Which Morocco Desert Should You Visit?

For the classic Sahara — tall golden dunes, a camel trek, a night under the stars — go to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes; it needs at least three days from Marrakech. Zagora is a shorter two-day option with smaller dunes and more palm-grove scenery. Agafay is not a sand desert at all — it is a rocky plateau 40 minutes from Marrakech, worth doing only as a half-day or overnight when you have no time for the real thing.

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): the real Sahara

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a sea of orange dunes up to 150 m high near the Algerian border. This is the postcard Sahara: a sunset camel trek, dinner and drumming at a camp between the dunes, sunrise from the crest. The catch is distance — about 560 km from Marrakech — so you need a 3-day tour at minimum, ideally four or more. It is also the route that passes Ait Ben Haddou and Todra Gorge. Zagora (Draa Valley): the quick Sahara fix

Zagora is about 360 km from Marrakech and reachable on a two-day tour with one overnight. The dunes at Erg Lehoudi and Tinfou are modest — closer to large sand hills — but the drive through the Draa Valley palm groves and over the Tizi n’Tichka pass is scenic, and you still get a camel ride and a camp. Choose Zagora if you have only two days and still want a taste of the desert.

Agafay: desert scenery, not desert

Agafay is a bare, rocky moonscape about 30 km from Marrakech — no sand dunes, but dramatic stony hills with the Atlas behind. It works as a half-day of quad biking or a short camel ride, a sunset dinner, or a single glamping night when your schedule has no room for Merzouga or Zagora. It is not the Sahara and should not be sold as it.

What about Erg Chigaga?

Erg Chigaga, beyond the village of M’hamid, is the other field of big dunes — wilder and far less visited than Erg Chebbi because the final stretch is 4x4-only. It needs three to four days and suits travellers who want the scale of the dunes without the crowds.

Which desert should I choose?

If you have three or more days from Marrakech, or you are travelling Marrakech to Fes: Merzouga. If you have exactly two days: Zagora. If you have less than a day, or just a spare evening: Agafay. If you want somewhere remote and have four days: Erg Chigaga.

Can you do the Sahara as a day trip from Marrakech?

Not the real dunes. Merzouga and Zagora are both too far to reach and return within a day. Agafay is the only "desert" you can do in an afternoon. For Erg Chebbi you need at least one overnight — realistically a three-day trip. See our full range of desert tours.
