2 Weeks in Morocco: The Complete 14-Day Itinerary

Two weeks is the length that lets you make a full loop of Morocco — the northern cities, the Rif, the imperial cities, two nights in the Sahara, the Atlas and the Atlantic coast — without doubling back or rushing any one place. The route below runs north-to-south and matches our 14-day grand tour from Tangier; reversed, it is the 15-day grand tour from Marrakech. Days 1–2: Tangier and Chefchaouen

Arrive in Tangier — by air, or by ferry from Tarifa in Spain — and see the kasbah and the Caves of Hercules. Then drive two hours south to Chefchaouen, the blue-washed mountain town, for a night. Day 3: Chefchaouen to Fes via Volubilis

Break the drive at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the hilltop shrine town of Moulay Idriss and the gates of Meknes before reaching Fes in the late afternoon.

Days 4–5: Fes

Two nights in Fes to walk Fes el-Bali, the largest car-free medina in the world — the tanneries, the madrasas, the coppersmiths’ square. A local guide earns its cost here; our Fes guide explains why.

Day 6: Fes to Merzouga

South over the Middle Atlas past Ifrane and the cedar forest at Azrou, where Barbary macaques gather by the road (see Ifrane and Azrou), then down the Ziz Valley to Merzouga. A camel trek carries you onto Erg Chebbi for sunset and a night in a desert camp.

Day 7: A Full Day in the Desert

Rather than driving straight out, spend the day around the dunes: a 4x4 run to the village of Khamlia for Gnaoua music, the seasonal lake and its flamingos, nomad families, or sandboarding. A second night in the sand is the payoff of a longer trip. Our Merzouga desert guide has the options.

Day 8: Merzouga to the Dades Valley

West along the "road of a thousand kasbahs" with a stop at Todra Gorge, then a night below the folded rock of the Dades Valley.

Day 9: Dades Valley to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou

Through Ouarzazate and its film studios to Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar seen in dozens of films (our Ait Ben Haddou guide has the history), then over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Marrakech.

Days 10–11: Marrakech

Two nights in Marrakech for Jemaa el-Fnaa, the souks, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle Garden — our things to do in Marrakech guide has a plan. Keep a half-day free for the High Atlas foothills if you want a mountain walk.

Days 12–13: Essaouira

Two and a half hours west to Essaouira, the walled Atlantic port — ramparts, fresh seafood at the harbour, argan-oil cooperatives run by women’s collectives, and a wind that draws kitesurfers. See our Essaouira guide.

Day 14: Departure

Drive back to Marrakech for your flight, or fly out of Essaouira or Casablanca depending on your ticket.

Route Variations

Run the loop in reverse to match your flights — our departure-city guide has the combinations.
